01 — Overview

ChulaVerse is an academic initiative to bring virtual reality into university education. I was brought in to design the spatial UI, onboarding experience, and interaction framework for the VR learning platform.

02 — Problem

Traditional e-learning platforms feel flat and passive. Students struggle with engagement and retention when consuming educational content through 2D video and text-based formats.

03 — Research

Reviewed VR UX literature and guidelines (Meta Presence Platform, Apple visionOS HIG). Observed student behavior during a pilot VR session and conducted surveys to understand comfort levels with VR headsets and spatial navigation.

04 — Design Process

Mapped spatial interaction zones and defined a comfortable field-of-view layout. Designed gaze-based UI components with clear affordances, created onboarding flows that guided first-time VR users step-by-step, and ran walkthroughs with students.

05 — Solution

Developed a spatial UI system with floating panels, contextual tooltips, and an onboarding tutorial. Designed for comfort: low visual noise, high contrast UI, and clear navigation anchors to reduce motion sickness.

06 — Outcome

Students reported higher engagement compared to traditional lectures. The spatial onboarding was completed successfully by 90% of first-time VR users without assistance. Framework adopted by the university for future VR content.
